The Church of Uganda, in steadfast commitment to the sanctity of its ecclesiastical processes, has expressed grave concern over false and misleading reports circulating on social media, erroneously claiming that a Bishop has been elected for the Diocese of Busoga.

In a press release issued on 4th August 2025, the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, declared with apostolic authority, “No election of a Bishop has taken place in the Busoga Diocese. The information being disseminated is utterly false and should be disregarded with the contempt it deserves."

He emphasized that the Church of Uganda adheres to a sacred and transparent process for the election of Bishops, rooted in prayer, discernment, and canonical governance.

The Church of Uganda follows a divinely ordained procedure for electing Bishops, as guided by its Constitution and Canons. The process begins with the vacancy of a diocesan see, after which the Provincial Chancellor, in consultation with the House of Bishops, appoints a Nominations Committee.

This committee, composed of Godly and discerning clergy and laity, prayerfully nominates candidates who are vetted for their spiritual maturity, theological soundness, and pastoral competence.

The House of Bishops, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, then convenes to elect the Bishop from the nominated candidates. Upon election, the Bishop-elect’s name is formally announced through official Church channels, ensuring clarity and unity among the faithful.

Rev. Canon Ongeng assured the flock that an official announcement will be made through authorized Church communication channels once the election has occurred and the Bishop-elect’s name is duly confirmed.

He urged all members of the Body of Christ, the media, and the public to refrain from spreading or acting upon unverified information, which risks sowing discord and confusion among the faithful.

The Church calls upon the Christians of Busoga Diocese to remain steadfast in prayer, united in faith, and patient as the due process for electing their next Bishop unfolds.
