A violent riot at St. Joseph College Ombaci on August 9, 2025, led to the indefinite suspension of all Senior 2 and Senior 3 students after they allegedly engaged in malicious damage to school property, authorities confirmed.

According to a police report (AYE CRB 141/25) filed by Headteacher Ondoga Charles, 47, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM during supper time. 

SP Jimmy Anguyo Baiga, the West Nile regional police spokesperson confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the disturbance began when a  Senior 2 student  allegedly engaged in disorderly conduct. Head Prefect Jura Daniel, a Senior 5 student, attempted to intervene, advising the student to comply with school rules. He reportedly became combative, prompting Daniel to slap him once. 

Police say this altercation incited a group of Senior 2 and Senior 3 students to riot, resulting in widespread vandalism. 

The group damaged windows, glass panes, dormitory doors, and approximately 10 meters of the school’s perimeter wall.

SP Anguyo explained that the situation was managed after Ayivu East Police Division responded swiftly, with the District Police Commander (DPC) and a West Nile Region team visiting the scene. 

Officers were deployed to prevent further destruction, and the Regional Scenes of Crime Officer (SOCO) conducted a forensic examination. 

CCTV footage was reviewed, enabling school administrators to identify several suspects and  Statements were recorded from witnesses.

Police say Intensive  investigation remains ongoing, with no arrests made as of yet.

Following an emergency meeting, the School Board of Governors and administrators resolved to suspend all Senior 2 and Senior 3 students, ordering them to vacate the premises immediately.

The West Nile regional police spokesperson SP Jimmy Anguyo Baiga confirmed that investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Jimmy Anguyo, Public Relations Officer for West Nile Region, urged parents and guardians to cooperate with authorities as inquiries continue. 

The school has not announced when or if the suspended students will be allowed to return.
