His Royal Highness (Dabandal) Odong David Ateenyi, the cultural leader of Paluo-Chope, has introduced a transformative bursary scheme aimed at supporting academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students in Kiryandongo District.

The initiative, unveiled during a recent community meeting in Bunyama Village, Kyankende Sub-County, seeks to ensure that no learner is denied access to education due to financial constraints.

The bursary program, spearheaded by Mr. Opio Fred Amooti Dachwa, the Minister of Education and officer in charge of the scheme at the Chope Cultural Institution, is made possible through a partnership with 18 schools and universities.

Mr. Opio highlighted the critical need for the initiative, noting that many school-aged teenagers in the district have either been unable to access basic education, dropped out, or failed to pursue higher education due to a lack of financial and material support. This has contributed to high illiteracy rates and hindered students’ aspirations to become responsible citizens of Uganda.

“The bursary will provide opportunities for potential learners to enroll in primary education and pursue medical courses at the university level,” Mr. Opio stated, emphasizing the program’s focus on addressing educational disparities.

The scheme is open to all eligible students in Kiryandongo District, regardless of religion or clan, with selections based strictly on merit, academic qualifications, and verified performance potential.

Mr. Opio assured the community that the application process would be transparent and rigorous to ensure fairness.

Local elders have praised the initiative as a timely intervention, particularly for peasant farming families who face economic hardships.

“As peasant farmers, our income is seasonal and unpredictable, making it difficult to afford school fees, especially for university medical courses,” said Abdul, a parent from the community.

Applications for the bursary are now open for primary-level students and those seeking to pursue medical courses at the university.
