A businessman identified as Alfred Tekakwo from Akwanji-Nyatonzi Trading Centre was killed instantly on Wednesday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding reportedly slammed into the rear of a motor vehicle on Nyagak Hill, Athuma Village, Oyeyu Parish, Nyapea Sub-County.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 2:00 PM as both the deceased and the vehicle were travelling downhill towards Paidha Town.

Fred Onenarach, Chairperson of Zombo District Boda Boda Association, confirmed the incident and urged riders to exercise caution on hilly sections, maintain their motorcycles properly and strictly observe speed limits.

“Mr Tekakwo was confirmed dead this afternoon, we discovered he slammed at the rear of vehicle. We call upon Riders to be extra careful and ensure their brakes are in good condition,” Onenarach said.

Nerry Maditkwo, Secretary of Nyapea Business Community, announced that the body of the deceased had been transferred to Nyapea Hospital Mortuary.

Joe Ubedgiu, LC III Councillor for Oyeyu Parish, described the death as a “big loss” to the entire Nyapea community.

By press time, police had not yet reached the scene and details of the vehicle involved remained unconfirmed.

Relatedly , today three people including a two-year-old child – sustained serious injuries when the motorcycle they were travelling on from Nebbi to Paidha crashed at Dwonga ward, Paidha town council.

The victims were rushed to a private clinic in Paidha Town Council for emergency treatment.

Boda Boda Associations leadership in Zombo, have renewed calls for improved road safety measures, particularly for boda bodas operating on the busy Nebbi-Paidha highway.

The Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report for 2024 reveals a 6.4% increase in road traffic crashes compared to 2023, with casualties rising by 4.4%. While common traffic offenses dropped by 19.2%from 528,025 cases in 2023 to 426,432 in 2024, the report notes that an average of 14 people die daily from road accidents. The peak time for such incidents is between 18:00 and 19:59, with 3,780 crashes recorded during that period.
