Territorial police in Nebbi are investigating the fatal shooting of a police officer and the wounding of four other people by a fellow officer during a botched arrest in Nebbi Municipality on the night of June 6, 2026.

The deceased officer has been identified as PC Olupot Joseph.

The injured include: Okecha Charles (male adult, 44 years), Pimer Irene (female adult, 32 years), Epifania Joy (female child, 2 years), and Oroch Charles (male adult, 52 years).

The suspect officer is PC Okello Sam, Badge Number 78710.

West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Josephine Angucia said the incident stemmed from a domestic misunderstanding between a couple.

According to Angucia, Atuhaire Praise, a 25-year-old Munyankore businesswoman and resident of Mutungo Zone 3, Nakawa Division in Kampala, travelled to Nebbi on June 5, 2026, with her boyfriend, Ocircan Robert, to his home in Kasuku Cell, Nyacara Ward, Abindu Division, Nebbi Municipality.

The two spent the night together but had a misunderstanding the following morning.

Atuhaire then reported the matter at Nebbi Central Police Station (CPS). Officers at the counter called Ocircan to report to the station, but he declined. 

Police later booked out for his arrest at 6:10 pm.

“Upon arresting him, community members started throwing stones at the officers. PC Okello responded by shooting and in the process, he shot at his colleague PC Olupot Joseph and four other civilians,” SSP Angucia stated.

The victims were rushed to Nebbi General Hospital for treatment. PC Olupot Joseph was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Police have opened General Enquiry File (G.E.F) 15/2026 to investigate the incident. 

Statements have been recorded from witnesses, the firearm in question has been recovered and exhibited, and PC Okello Sam is detained at Nebbi CPS pending investigations.

Authorities visited and examined the crime scene to recover more evidence.

A postmortem report is being obtained from the hospital, and exhibits are being submitted for forensic examination.

The public has been urged to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. Residents are asked to cooperate with police to ensure justice is served.
