Koboko police on June 19, 2026 carried out an intelligence-led joint operation in Ludara sub-county that resulted in the uprooting of illegal opium gardens and the arrest of one suspect.

The operation was led by the District Police Commander (DPC) for Koboko, SP Masereka Micheal, in liaison with the LC.5 Chairperson of Koboko district.

According to SSP Josephine Angucia, West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, During the operation, gardens of opium were destroyed.

Angucia confirmed the arrest of One suspect, Ratib Haruna, a male adult resident of Modo village, Bamure Parish, Ludara Sub-county in Koboko district,

Police say more operations will be conducted to curb opium production in the district.

“It should be noted that production, sale, consumption and being in possession of opium by private individuals is illegal. Whoever deals in it will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law,” said SSP Josephine Angucia, Police Public Relations Officer for the West Nile Region.

Angucia encouraged the general public and local leaders to continue sharing information on opium cultivation with police for necessary action and management.

According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025, A total of 1,569 cases of narcotics and psychotropic substances were registered in 2025, down from 2,240 cases in 2024 representing a 30% decrease.

Despite the overall reduction, police expressed ongoing concern about narcotics infiltrating schools and homes.
