Alur Cultural Festival Rocks West Nile – Proceeds to Fuel Clean Water Extension for the Community

Under blazing sunshine that lit up the bustling commercial hub of Paidha in Zombo District, West Nile sub-region, the historic 11th annual Alur Cultural Festival took centre stage on Sunday, 30 August 2026.

This star-studded cultural spectacular served as the ultimate curtain-closer for revelers, entertainers, cultural dance troupes, comedians, journalists and thousands of Alur subjects streaming in from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond. 

The event delivered a full showcase of Alur culture, cuisine and dance under the resonant theme “Back to Our Roots.

By 10 a.m., the expansive Lady M Gardens along Solia Stream in Jupandika East Cell, Nyibola Ward, just a stone’s throw from the DR Congo border was already buzzing with festival energy.

 Boda boda riders from Paidha Town Council worked overtime ferrying crowds to the venue, where smooth and soothing reggae vibes set a welcoming soundtrack.

Partners including MTN Uganda and the Alur Kingdom Secretariat were locked and loaded at their branded tents.

Revelers wasted no time soaking up the atmosphere , snapping selfies, sipping cold drinks and tearing into muchomo, gearing up for the long-awaited production.

Come 3 p.m., the grounds were packed solid with a team from Red Cross all set. Snaking queues formed at the gates as fans paid entry fees in cash or via MTN MoMo.

Traditional Agwara and Ndara dance crews were already in position, locking in the set for a high-octane cultural showcase.

Liza David, LCI Chairperson of Jupandika East, opened the grand production with a powerful keynote, followed by the LCV leadership.

MC Tasha kicked things into gear with the thunderous gospel anthem “Tin Cenge,” clearing the runway for Zombo LCV Chairperson James Oruna Oyullu to officially welcome the massive crowd that had converged next to Solia Stream, within touching distance of eastern DR Congo.

Oyullu praised the organisers and floated the idea of making the festival a rotating regional production. He also used the platform to drop a crucial public-health alert on the Ebola outbreak raging across the border in DR Congo, a message reinforced by Zombo District Health Officer Mark Bramali, who urged caution given that six provinces, including neighbouring Ituri, had already reported cases.

Before leaving the brightly lit main stage, Alur Kingdom Executive Director Vincent Orach, saluted the organisers and presented MTN Uganda with a striking portrait of Alur King His Majesty Ubimu Philliph Rauni Olarker III, drawing roaring applause from the packed house.

The entertainment vibes peaked when Orach welcomed Chief Guest Rwoth Angiya Emmanuel with a thunderous rendition of Bush Boy’s iconic Ker Alur cultural anthem.

Chief Angiya hailed the organisers for keeping the Alur brand elevated, urging subjects to preserve heritage, reject negative dressing and politics, and champion love, unity and peace.

He also spotlighted protection of the girl child from teenage pregnancy and the need for hard work to keep girls in school.

Reigning Little Miss Uganda West Nile, Davina, lit up the stage with her confident runway walk and polished presence, leaving the crowd stunned.

Her powerful speech on preserving good dressing codes and cultural heritage sealed the moment.

In recognition, the CEO of the Alur Cultural Festival instantly appointed her Brand Ambassador for the next five years.

Chief Francis Omwon Denis Ringu Lango II of Kal Awora Chiefdom, CEO of the Alur Cultural Festival and sharp in army-green pencil-cut couture, then took the mic.

He formally welcomed the Alur Kingdom delegation , Chief Angiya Emmanuel of Kal Omua Chiefdom Paidha and Executive Director Vincent Orach Ocaya and gave major props to the festival team, MTN Uganda, Radio Paidha, Comfort Aluminum, Chill Out Longe, Lady M and other sponsors for their solid backing.

He dropped the showstopper announcement, " proceeds from this year’s production will go toward extending clean water sources to our communities here" . The revelation drew gasps of surprise and delight from thousands who had assumed it was purely a commercial gig.

Next year’s edition is already locked in for Luo Grounds in Nebbi Municipality.

Jupajalagatha Ndara dance crew officially kicked off the performances. MCs Tasha and Banton kept the energy soaring while DJ Roger Boy delivered thunderous, driving melodies that elevated the entire production to historic festival status.

Crowds danced their hearts out as Chief Angiya flagged off the Agwara and Ndara dance sequences on the lower ground. 

Dust rose as revelers went all-in, giving the moment everything they had.

Established in 2015 under the Alur Cultural Association Limited, the Alur Cultural Festival has grown into one of West Nile’s premier cultural gatherings, dedicated to preserving, promoting and showcasing the heritage of the Alur people across Uganda and the DR Congo.

The 11th edition in 2026 centred on Zombo District and featured traditional dances, music, crafts, indigenous foods and live cultural performances.

The platform gave younger generations, many growing up detached from these practices, a chance to reconnect with Agwara, Ndara, songs, instruments and performance traditions under pressure from modern entertainment and globalisation.

Comedian Dan Rwothomio aka Baby Boy, I Boy, blogger Comfort Ug and artists from across Uganda, the DRC and the diaspora reinforced a powerful shared sense of identity and belonging.

As night fell, MCs Tasha and Banton ushered local acts including Baraka onto the main stage for packed-house sets, while traditional dance enthusiasts migrated to the western side of the grounds to catch the pure Alur dance showcases.

The festival continues to serve as a launchpad for young musicians, dancers, artists and cultural performers championing Alur identity.

Businesses thrived , empty beer crates and boxes were already stacking up by 10 p.m.

Artisans displayed traditional beadwork, weaving, baskets, jewellery and crafts that sold briskly, creating valuable intergenerational knowledge transfer.

The 2026 Paidha edition lived up to the high expectations of fans who had anticipated it in May before an Ebola-related postponement forced the reschedule.

By 7 a.m. Monday morning, revelers were still filtering out of the grounds, having given their all to a once-a-year historic production , the first time the festival has ever been staged in Zombo since its 2015 launch.

“We shall continue with this event for our people,” declared Chief Ringu Langu II.
