A horrific incident of mob action unfolded in Jupakeno village, Ayomu parish, Jupangira sub-county, Nebbi district, on March 8, 2025, resulting in the brutal killing of two suspected thieves.

The victims, who were riding a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number UGD 961U, were allegedly caught with a stolen goat, sparking a violent reaction from the angry mob, who stoned them to death, and set their motorcycle ablaze.

 Onega Alfred, the LCI Chairperson of JupaKeno Village, noted that he received information about the tragic incident at around 6:24 Am.

Ogenmungu Dominic Sunday, Chairperson of LC3 Jupangira sub-county, confirmed the incident, warning of vigilantism. 

"We urge the youth to refrain from taking the law into their hands. Let us work together to maintain law and order in our communities." Ogenmungu stated.

Meanwhile Waibi Philbert, District Police Commander of Nebbi , condemned the killing and appealed to the youth to use their energy productively. 

"We have launched an investigation into the incident. We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us. Let us work together to build a safer and more just society." Said Waibi.

One of the deceased was only identified as Okwai from Nyamucaru village, Nyaryegi Parish, Alwi sub-county, Pakwach district.

 In a similar vein Last year, a youth suspected to have stolen a motorcycle, was killed in Patongo village, Ayomu parish, Jupangira sub-county.

This incident adds to the growing concern of mob justice in Nebbi district and the greater West Nile sub-region.

The police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. 

The bodies of the deceased was conveyed to Nebbi General Hospital for autopsy.

According to the 2024 police annual crime report, 26 people die daily in Uganda due to murder and accidents, with mob justice cases remaining a major concern.
