Uganda’s diplomatic ties with South Sudan have come under scrutiny amid accusations of siding with President Salva Kiir as an individual rather than the South Sudanese government.

Tolit Atiya, a political analyst, weighed in on the growing concerns surrounding Uganda's stance, noting that the support for Kiir seems to be personal rather than a reflection of national interest.

“Uganda is perceived to be siding with President Salva Kiir as an individual, not as a country. This raises questions about Uganda’s position in the ongoing South Sudan peace process and its commitment to long-term stability in the region," Atiya said during an interview on NTV.

Atiya further pointed out that while Uganda has been a strong ally to South Sudan in the past, there are concerns that President Kiir has deviated from the 2018 peace agreement, which was seen as a significant step toward peace and stability.

“Internal critics have highlighted that Kiir’s actions have deviated from the agreement, which had been a hallmark of peace for South Sudan,” Atiya added.

This shift in Uganda’s diplomatic approach has led to growing concerns that Uganda’s continued support for Kiir may hinder the peace process and affect regional stability.
