NRM Sec. General Richard Todwong Delivers a Bold Message to Museveni Amid Dramatic Scenes in Uganda

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong has praised President Yoweri Museveni for restoring peace and security in Uganda, particularly in regions previously affected by conflict.
While addressing the media during a public engagement, Todwong reflected on the painful history of displacement and persecution experienced by communities in northern Uganda, the West Nile, and other border regions.
“We thank President Museveni for choosing peace over war,” Todwong stated.
“The people in this subregion had run into either DR Congo or South Sudan in fear of persecution, but when the NRM government came to power, it called them back, resettled them, and worked with them up to today.” he added.
His remarks come at a time when political tensions and public protests are intensifying across parts of the country, raising concerns about governance, human rights, and economic pressure.
Despite the growing dissatisfaction, Todwong emphasized the NRM's long-standing commitment to peace, arguing that stability remains the foundation for development.
He credited the government's approach to reconciliation and resettlement as a key turning point in Uganda’s history.
“Many forget how far we’ve come. There was a time when families lived in fear, hiding in refugee camps. Now, we have roads, schools, and hospitals where there was once only war,” he added.
Even as Uganda faces a wave of political uncertainty and questions about leadership succession, the NRM’s top leadership appears to be rallying support by revisiting its past successes in peacebuilding—a strategy that may influence how the party navigates the next political chapter.
