General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, faces mounting pressure as opposition leaders demand his arrest following the release of National Unity Platform (NUP) member Noah Mutwe on bail.

The court’s decision to free Mutwe, a close associate of opposition leader Bobi Wine, has reignited scrutiny over what critics call selective application of the law.

Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi criticized the government, pointing to Gen Muhoozi’s history of inflammatory social media posts, including threats against opposition figures, which have gone unpunished.

“When is Muhoozi going to be brought to court to answer for a similar offence?”

Ssenyonyi asked, highlighting the general’s controversial X posts, such as threats to behead Bobi Wine and detain Mutwe’s colleague Eddie Mutwe, whom Kainerugaba admitted to holding in his “basement” in May 2025.

The Uganda Law Society and human rights groups have condemned Kainerugaba’s actions as part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent ahead of the 2026 elections.

Mutwe’s release has galvanized NUP supporters, who rallied under #FreeEddieMutwe, demanding accountability.

The government has downplayed Kainerugaba’s remarks as “casual,” but public outrage persists.

As political tensions rise, Kainerugaba’s military role and presidential ambitions dubbed the “Muhoozi Project” face growing criticism, with calls for justice threatening to overshadow his father’s long-standing regime.
