Authorities in Nebbi District have cracked down on illegal meat trade, detaining four individuals for violating animal quarantine restrictions under Sections 11 and 25 of the Animals and Diseases Act.

The operation, conducted at 07:30 on May 3, 2025, targeted Oryang Cell, Forest Ward, Thatha Division, and Arumkeng Cell, Nebbi Hill Ward, Abindu Division, within Nebbi Municipality.

Evidence, including the seized meat, was photographed, secured.

According to a press release issued by SP Collins Asea, the West Nile regional Police Spokesperson, the suspects, identified as Odakgiu Muzamil Swaibu, 63, a farmer; Owachgiu Desmond, 29, a farmer; Ojur Sam, 38, a butcher; and an unnamed fourth individual, all residents of the affected areas, were apprehended for slaughtering and selling meat in defiance of a district-wide quarantine enforced since February 2025.

He added that, the confiscated meat was inspected by veterinary officials, deemed fit for human consumption, and ordered donated to local charities.

Nebbi Central Police Station logged the case under references SD18/03/05/2025, SD19/03/05/2025, CRB174/2025, and CRB175/2025.

Evidence, including the seized meat, was photographed, secured, and disposed of per veterinary recommendations.

Police said Statements from witnesses and suspects have been recorded, with a veterinary autopsy report pending. The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

SP Asea Collins, the West Nile regional Police Spokesperson, stated that further updates will follow as the case progresses, emphasizing strict enforcement of quarantine measures to protect public health and livestock safety.

Nebbi imposed Animal quarantine early this year, as one of the preemptive measures to mitigate the rampant spread of foot and mouth disease in the area.
