President Yoweri Museveni's government has taken decisive action following the release of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi by Tanzanian authorities, while Ugandan Agatha Atuhaire remains incommunicado after their arrest in Dar es Salaam.

The two were detained on May 19, 2025, while observing the trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

While Mwangi was deported and abandoned in Ukunda-Kenya this Thursday, Amy 22, Atuhaire’s whereabouts remained unclear, prompting Uganda to act swiftly.

On May 22, the Ugandan High Commission in Dar es Salaam issued a formal letter to Tanzanian authorities, demanding Atuhaire’s immediate release and repatriation.The letter, signed by High Commissioner Amb.

Richard Kabonero, expressed concern over Atuhaire’s detention at the Central Police Station since her arrest, stressing her right to communicate with her family and the mission.

It also called for consular access to ascertain her well-being, warning that continued detention could strain diplomatic ties.

Atuhaire’s detention has drawn criticism from activists, who accuse Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan of targeting foreign observers to suppress dissent ahead of elections.
