Watu Credit, a leading provider of asset financing, has launched a strategic corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of Boda Boda Associations across Uganda’s West Nile sub-region.

The initiative kicked off with the donation of 25 plastic chairs to the Zombo Boda Boda Association in Paidha on Friday, marking a noteworthy step in strengthening community partnerships.

Samuel Malinga, Branch Manager of Watu Credit’s Arua branch, which oversees operations across Pakwach, Arua, Maracha, Koboko, Yumbe, and Adjumani, underscored the company’s commitment to supporting the region’s Boda Boda Associations.

“This donation is just the beginning. We are dedicated to identifying and addressing the needs of these associations to foster stronger collaboration,” Malinga said during an interview.

He highlighted the critical role of the Boda Boda industry, noting that it is a key driver of Uganda’s economy.

The initiative aligns with Watu Credit’s broader mission to engage with grassroots stakeholders and provide meaningful support beyond motorcycle financing.

Malinga emphasized the company’s holistic approach, which includes financial literacy training, savings programs, and facilitating access to riding licenses for Boda Boda riders.

“Our goal is not just to provide motorcycles but to transform lives by improving opportunities and financial stability for riders,” he added.

Fred Onenarach, Chairperson of the Zombo District Boda Boda Association, praised Watu Credit’s contribution, pledging full cooperation to deepen the partnership.

“This support strengthens our operations and demonstrates Watu’s commitment to our community,” Onenarach stated.

Watu Credit plans to expand the initiative to other districts in the West Nile sub-region, including Pakwach, Madi-Okolo, and Nebbi, as part of its ongoing efforts to bridge gaps in financial access and empower communities.

The company also offers tailored financing solutions, such as bundling riding license fees into loan agreements, to enhance rider safety and compliance while easing financial burdens.

Despite its economic significance, the Boda Boda industry faces challenges, including inadequate management, high accident rates, limited access to affordable financing, and reported crime.

According to the observer publication, The boda boda industry is the second largest employer in Uganda. Available data show that there are an estimated 1.2 million boda boda riders in Uganda with about 150,000 registered stages. In Kampala alone, there are 350,000 boda boda riders and 1,021 registered stages.
