For years, residents of Uganda’s West Nile sub-region have been told that better roads are on the way. But for many, those promises have worn thin.

From dusty, pothole-filled tracks in the dry season to muddy, impassable routes in the rains, the state of the roads has become a daily frustration for communities and businesses alike. Farmers struggle to get produce to markets, traders face higher transport costs, and school children often find it impossible to reach class after a heavy downpour.

“We’ve been hearing about these road projects for as long as I can remember, but nothing ever changes,” says Joseph, a community elder in Arua. “During the rainy season, some villages are completely cut off.”

The government has, in the past, outlined ambitious road rehabilitation plans for the region — projects meant to improve trade, connect remote villages, and open up opportunities for economic growth. But residents say deadlines have been missed, budgets have gone unaccounted for, and progress has stalled.

Civil society groups are now calling for action over rhetoric. They want clear timelines, transparent budgeting, and regular updates to ensure promised roadworks don’t fade into political talking points.

With the Ministry of Works and Transport yet to issue a fresh statement, frustrations are mounting. The people of West Nile say they no longer want pledges — they want results.
