Arua: The UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arua Campus, has ushered in a new era of student leadership following a vibrant election held on Sunday, October 19, 2025. 

The exercise saw the election of a new Guild President, Deputy Guild President, and Guild Speaker, marking a significant transition for the institution.

First-year Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication student, Mr. Enzama Francis, emerged victorious as the new Guild President, defeating his challenger, Ms. Charity Asara.

Mr. Enzama campaigned on a platform of amplifying student voices and fostering collaboration between students and the campus administration. 

In his acceptance speech, the Guild President-elect expressed gratitude to the student body for their trust, pledging a tenure marked by unity and a strong partnership with the administration.

“I am shocked by the results. As a son of a peasant farmer, I never thought I’d be your leader. I promise not to disappoint you,” he stated.

Ms. Charity Asara, who ran on a platform addressing gender inequality, was appointed Deputy Guild President as per the Electoral Commission’s regulations. Reflecting on the outcome, Ms. Asara expressed optimism about her new role, stating, “I’m glad and not surprised by the results. My emphasis was on gender-based issues, which are often overlooked. I look forward to working with President Enzama to make UMCAT a better institution.”

Amid Low turnout, the election, overseen by Mr. Lematia Henry, Chairman of the UMCAT Electoral Commission, was declared free and fair.

“We conducted the election in a transparent manner, and no complaints were received,” Mr. Lematia affirmed.

However, concerns were raised about voter participation, with Mr. Jurua Joseph, Academic In-Charge at UMCAT Arua Campus, expressing disappointment at the low turnout. 

“Out of over 70 students, only 17 turned up to vote. This is unacceptable, especially from students who frequently raise concerns about leadership,” Mr. Jurua stated. 

He urged the incoming leadership to meet the expectations of the student body and the institution.

The election follows last year’s historic vote, where Mr. Dramadi Morris became the inaugural Guild President of the Arua Campus, defeating Mr. Opio John Paul.

As preparations for the official handover ceremony intensify, the campus administration is yet to announce the date for the event.

UMCAT School of Journalism and Mass Communication remains a cornerstone of journalism education in Uganda. With its main campus in Kampala and branches across the country, the institution continues to shape the nation’s media landscape by equipping students with professional skills and fostering leadership.

The newly elected leadership is expected to build on the institution’s legacy while addressing the challenges and aspirations of the student community.
