A pedestrian was struck and killed by a truck in the early hours of Monday in Malara Village, Pakadha Parish, Abanga Sub-County, Zombo District, amid growing concerns over rising road accidents in the area.

The deceased has been only  identified as Okethi, a resident of Odarlembe Village in Pamitu Parish, Abanga Sub-County.

Eyewitnesses, speaking on condition of anonymity, reported that Okethi was walking home from a night disco when the incident occurred.

Richard Awekunimungu, the LCIII Chairperson of Abanga Sub-County, confirmed the accident and urged road users to exercise greater caution.

He noted that recent road improvements across the district have led to higher speeds among motorists, contributing to the spike in crashes.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Nyapea Hospital for postmortem examination, according to the LCIII chairperson.

The driver of the truck, who remains unidentified, is currently at Serr Police Post, where the vehicle has been impounded pending transfer to the Central Police Station for further investigations.

The incident highlights ongoing road safety challenges in Zombo District, where rehabilitated roads have improved motorability but also encouraged reckless driving and speeding among many riders and drivers.

Recently, Zombo's Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Festus Ayikobua, called on road users to prioritize caution and responsible behavior on the well-rehabilitated roads to curb the trend of reckless riding and driving.

No further details on potential charges or the driver's condition were immediately available.
