Local Gov’t Ministry Commences Construction Of Water Dam Project In Nebbi

The Ministry of Local Government with funding from United Nation Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) has earmarked UGX 371 million for installation of water dam systems in the communities of Kucwiny Sub Counties in Nebbi district in a bid to improve the acute water shortage for livestock.

While speaking during the commissioning and handing over of the sites to the contractor PEGOSA Engineering works, Nebbi District Natural Resource Officer Doreen Fualing noted that the dam sites are in Jupala village, Lee Parish in Kucwiny Sub county.

Fauling said this project will help solve the challenge of water scarcity for livestock and communities, serve as a model for local led solutions that will build community resilience, increasing climate-related challenges, including severe droughts and unpredictable flooding.

Nebbi District Assistant Water Officer Cwothembo Brian, revealed that the initiative will support over 500 households with a total of 100.000 cubic liters of water in the cattle corridor of Kucwiny Sub County in Nebbi district.

Cwothembo said investing in the ecosystem restoration and conservation of the environment through such projects will help vulnerability to drought and floods, ensuring sustainable water supply for future generation for both human and livestock.

“National policies in a bid to help reduce the water stressed Sub Counties, the district water sector with availability of funds, shall continue having a process to construct more water dams and extend clean pipe water.” Cwothembo observed       

Okaba Jinaro, the Local Council One Chairperson of Jupala village appreciated the effort of the government for providing water source for livestock in the area.

The Director PEGOSA Engineering works Samuel Omara, assured leaders that the five-month contract for design will include installation of check dam, Solid drift and animal draft system among others.

Nebbi district LCV Chairperson, Urombi Emmanuel Rallied community to embrace the water dam project.

In 2024, the government with partners under Local Climate Adaptive Living (LoCAL) initiative stabilized the water dam project in Got Tar” Ossi East Parish, Parombo Sub-county Nebbi district.

The 100,000 cubic liter water dam was constructed at a cost of UGX 314,467,218 million and includes animal watering troughs and boreholes.

Doreen Fualing, the District Natural Resources Officer, emphasized the dam's importance, noting that it serves up to 3,834 households and 15,342 livestock, significantly improving the quality of life for families in the area.Nebbi district leadrs handing over water dam sites at Lee Village to tocontractor PEGOSA Engineering work this week.
