Uganda Engages Syria to Stop Execution of Convicted Housemaid
By Zoomer Africa | Damascus
The Ugandan government has confirmed it is actively engaging Syrian authorities in an effort to halt the execution of Vicky Ajok, a Ugandan domestic worker in Syria who was recently convicted of murdering her employer.
Speaking to the press, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Okello Oryem said diplomatic efforts are underway to explore possible legal and humanitarian options that could prevent Ajok’s execution.
“We have written to them several times. I hope that by the end of this week, one of us will be able to travel there. I am also trying to reach the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs to see how we can have this matter reconsidered,” Oryem said.
Background of the Case
Ajok confessed to killing her 87-year-old employer, Huda Shaarawi, a veteran Syrian national, at the victim’s home in Damascus on January 29.
According to reports, the killing was carried out using a blunt object, following allegations of prolonged abuse and unpaid wages. Ajok is said to have fled the scene but was later arrested by Syrian authorities.
Government Push for Diplomatic Intervention
Ugandan officials say they are pursuing diplomatic channels to seek clemency or a reduction of sentence, citing humanitarian grounds and the circumstances surrounding the case.
The government has also reiterated calls for stronger protection of Ugandan migrant workers abroad, particularly domestic workers in the Middle East, where reports of abuse and exploitation remain common.
Renewed Concerns Over Migrant Worker Safety
The case has reignited debate over the safety of Ugandans working overseas, with civil society groups urging government to strengthen labor export monitoring, worker protection mechanisms, and bilateral agreements.
As negotiations continue, Ajok’s fate now rests on diplomatic efforts and the willingness of Syrian authorities to reconsider the sentence.
