ZOMBO: Sick One-Year-Old Baby Dies Alone While Mother Attends Disco

By Mike Rwothomio

A one -year-and-three-month-old sick baby girl died alone in a house after her mother left her unattended to attend a disco night, local leaders confirmed.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Alisi Thungu Cell, Dwonga Ward, Paidha Town Council, Zombo District.

The child’s mother has been identified as 32-year-old Consulate Awacango, who was living with her grandmother at the time.

The baby was discovered lifeless by her grandmother, who lives in a separate house on the same compound.

According to Mawa Charles Onencan, the LCI chairperson of Thungu Cell, the child was found dead with blood oozing from her mouth.

“The child died alone after she went for a disco night. She came back in the morning and found everyone here. It is an unfortunate incident,” Onencan said.

He noted that Awacango often left the child in the care of her grandmother.

Family members expressed strong disappointment over the mother’s conduct.

Her uncle, Derick Awekonimumgu, linked the tragedy to Awacango’s long-standing habits of excessive drinking and misuse of substances, including aviation fuel ( Thina).

He said the family intends to hand her over to police so she can face disciplinary action and spend time in custody.

By the time of reporting, family members had locked Awacango inside the house.

The family plans to bury the child after the man she identified as the father refused to take responsibility, denying paternity.

Local leaders pointed to a lack of parental responsibility as a key factor behind such incidents and urged parents to guide their children toward responsible behaviour.Alisi cell where the incident occurred
