AFRICA: WE REFUSE TO BE A STORY OF PITY

By Bomua Deni Orera

We do not reject kindness from abroad;

we reject the lie that kindness must always come from abroad.

We welcome the helping hand,

but we will not surrender our identity to hold it.

We welcome the generous heart,

but we will not sell our dignity to earn it.

For Africa has hands that can build,

minds that can invent,

hearts that can love,

and children whose dreams deserve a chance to live.

A hungry child needs food, not a slogan.

A child out of school needs a classroom, not another promise.

A sick mother needs medicine, not a photograph for a fundraising campaign.

A struggling family needs opportunity, not a lifetime of being reminded of its suffering.

Let charity become a bridge to opportunity,

not a chain around the neck of dignity.

Let those who give remember to respect.

Let those who receive remember their worth.

And let those who have plenty never forget

that humanity is measured not by what we possess,

but by how we treat those who have less.

For we are not the photographs used to describe our pain.

We are the hands building solutions.

We are the farmers cultivating tomorrow,

the teachers opening minds,

the programmers speaking the language of machines,

the scientists searching for answers,

the entrepreneurs creating opportunities,

and the neighbours who share their last meal

so another family may survive the night.

We are not the stereotypes written about our past.

We are the authors of our future.

And we shall tell our own stories—

not to hide our failures,

not to deny our suffering,

not to pretend that all is well,

but to speak the truth without shame

and confront injustice without fear.

For loving Africa does not mean lying about Africa.

Loving Africa means telling her the truth,

challenging her corruption,

questioning her leaders,

protecting her children,

and refusing to watch her potential disappear

while her people fight one another.

Our love must be honest.

Our criticism must be constructive.

Our unity must not silence the truth.

And our truth must never become an excuse for hatred.

Let us correct one another without destroying one another.

Let us disagree without becoming enemies.

Let us celebrate our cultures without despising our neighbours.

Let us hold our leaders accountable

without forgetting our own responsibilities.

Africa does not need another generation

that knows how to blame but refuses to build.

She needs a generation that can recognise injustice

and still choose integrity;

that can inherit hardship

and still practise compassion;

that can discover wealth

and still remember the poor.

And to the African who has risen,

reach back and lift another.

To the African who is still struggling,

never mistake your present circumstances for your final identity.

To the African who has lost hope,

look again—there is still work to do,

there are still children to protect,

there are still dreams to build.

We shall not rise by making others fall.

We shall rise by helping one another stand.

This is our Africanism:

not the hatred of other peoples,

but the love of our own;

not the rejection of the world,

but the determination to meet it as equals;

not pride without responsibility,

but dignity strengthened by service.

And this is our promise:

We will feed our children.

We will educate our children.

We will protect our heritage.

We will question injustice.

We will build our institutions.

We will tell our stories.

We will support our own communities.

And we will welcome every honest partner

who comes to walk beside us rather than rule over us.

Let the world hear Africa's voice.

Let Zoomer Africa carry that voice across borders.

Let our words awaken minds,

and let our actions give those words meaning.

We are Africa.

We are worthy of dignity.

We are capable of greatness.

We are responsible for our future.

And we will rise—not through hatred, but through truth, love, courage, and unity.
