Ever tried kicking a standard outdoor soccer ball around an indoor basketball court? It’s a mess. The ball pops up to your chest on a simple pass, skids off the timber floor, and feels pretty much impossible to keep under control in tight spaces.

That’s because futsal is a completely different game. It’s quick, played in small areas, and relies heavily on keeping the ball pinned to the court. Having the right gear isn't just a bonus—it genuinely changes how you play. Whether you're ordering gear for a local academy, picking up balls for school sessions, or browsing options from brands like AZU Sports, here is a breakdown of what actually matters.

The Real Difference: It's All in the Bounce

The biggest misconception is that futsal balls are just smaller soccer balls. They aren't.

While outdoor balls are basically air chambers built to float and rebound high off grass, a proper futsal ball has a stuffed inner bladder. Inside, manufacturers pack it with foam or polyester material specifically to absorb impact.

When you drop a legit futsal ball specifications on a hard indoor surface, it shouldn't rebound higher than your knees. This low-bounce design keeps the ball glued to the floor. It lets players roll it under their soles, turn on a dime, and complete quick ground passes without the ball hopping around randomly.

Technical Specs Breakdown

If you're buying futsal equipment—especially across indoor leagues in places like Australia where court friction varies—these are the key numbers to check:

• Size 4 vs Size 3:

• Size 4 (Senior / Official): Standard for adults and kids aged 12 and up. Measures between 62 and 64 cm around.

• Size 3 (Junior): Tailored for kids under 12. Circumference sits at 56 to 59 cm, making it much easier for younger players to manage without hurting their ankles.

• Weight & Density: Futsal balls feel dense. A standard Size 4 weighs about 400g to 440g. That extra weight stops the ball from skipping out of bounds on polished hardwood or rubberized surfaces.

• The 2-Meter Bounce Rule: Under official FIFA specs, if you drop the ball onto a hard floor from 2 meters up, it should only bounce up between 50 cm and 65 cm. Anything higher isn't a real futsal ball.

• Cover Material: Stick with solid PU (polyurethane) or durable TPU outer covers. Hard courts cause heavy friction, so cheaper PVC covers wear out fast. Thermally bonded or solid hand-stitched 32-panel builds tend to hold their roundness best over months of abuse.

Specs at a Glance

• Junior (Size 3): Under 12s | 56–59 cm | 350–380g | Low Bounce (50–65 cm)

• Senior (Size 4): Age 12+ | 62–64 cm | 400–440g | Low Bounce (50–65 cm)

• Outdoor Soccer (Size 5): Age 12+ | 68–70 cm | 410–450g | High Bounce (115–155 cm)

Why Futsal Builds Better Players

There's a reason top football coaches push kids to play futsal during winter or off-seasons. Because the court is compact and the ball doesn't bounce away, players get vastly more touches on the ball per game. It forces you to react faster, trap clean using the sole of your shoe, and deliver crisp passes under pressure.

Keeping Your Ball in Top Shape

1. Don't Over-Pump It: Keep air pressure strictly around 6.0 to 9.0 PSI. If you pump it like a basketball, you ruin the internal dampening stuffed bladder.

2. Wipe Off the Dust: Give it a wipe with a wet cloth after court sessions. Court dust dries out the casing and ruins grip over time.

3. Keep It Out of Heat: Storing your gear in a boiling hot car trunk ruins the panel glue and damages the inner lining.
