Starting a Writing Career After Retirement: The Path to a First Novel

Most writers describe a lifelong dream of publishing a book. Others arrive at it by a much longer road. Matthew M. Watkins spent six years in the U.S. Navy and thirty years as an executive in the global plastics industry before he turned to historical fiction, and his story shows that a second career in writing can grow out of a very different first one.

Careers outside writing build useful habits

A long career in operations and management teaches things that novelists need but rarely list on a résumé: patience with long projects, comfort with deadlines, and a habit of checking details. Watkins is also a mechanical engineer by training, and that shows in his debut novel, Memphis Moon, where mills, machinery, travel, and daily working life in the 1860s South are described with care. For many readers, that practical attention is what makes a historical setting feel real.

Retirement gives time, not shortcuts

Having time to write does not make writing easy. A debut novel still needs structure, revision, and a steady routine. In Watkins’ case, the project also needed years of research into the Civil War era. The book is built around sisters Virginia and Lottie Moon, who were remembered for generations mainly as Confederate sympathizers, so he had to imagine much of their story from a very thin record.

Research is a project of its own

Anyone planning a historical debut novel can learn from this part of the process. Research is not a step you finish before writing begins. It continues alongside the draft, because every scene raises new questions: how long a journey took, what a person in a certain trade would know, what a city under occupation actually felt like. Treating research as its own project, with its own time and notes, keeps a first novel from stalling.

Decide how much to invent

A debut historical novelist also has to decide early where the record ends and imagination begins. In Memphis Moon, Virginia “Ginnie” Moon and her sister come from real history, while characters like Caleb Dawkins, a young miller from Virginia, are fictional. Being clear about that line helps an author stay consistent, and it helps readers trust the book.

A different path is still a path

Readers often respond to a story about how a book came to be. Many say they finished Memphis Moon in a single sitting, and Watkins’ journey from military service to the boardroom to debut novelist was featured in USA Today. For anyone who feels it is too late to start something creative, it is a reminder that experience from another field can become the foundation of a new one.

Watkins now lives between Memphis and Colorado with his wife Melanie. Memphis Moon is available in hardcover, paperback, and eBook. To read more about the novel, the history behind it, and the author, visit High Mountain Book.
