Tashahhud – Correct Method and Common Mistakes
Tashahhud is the sitting position in Salah (prayer) where a Muslim recites At-Tahiyyat and sends blessings upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is performed in the second and final sitting of prayer. This position includes specific hand placement and finger movement that were taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
1️⃣ Correct Finger Position During Tashahhud
In the correct method:
The right hand is placed on the right thigh.
The fingers are slightly folded.
The thumb and middle finger may touch to form a circle (according to some narrations).
The index finger is raised and pointed forward.
The finger is moved slightly or kept steady while making supplication (different authentic narrations mention slight movement).
This raised index finger symbolizes Tawheed (Oneness of Allah). It reflects the declaration of faith while reciting the testimony.
The left hand remains relaxed and placed flat on the left thigh.
2️⃣ Common Mistakes with the Finger
The image shows four incorrect methods marked with a red “X”. These mistakes include:
Shaking the entire hand instead of just the index finger.
Moving the finger excessively.
Raising multiple fingers instead of one.
Forming unnatural gestures not mentioned in authentic narrations.
The Sunnah method focuses only on raising and slightly moving the index finger.
3️⃣ Correct Way to Stand Up from Tashahhud
When rising from the sitting position:
Use your open hands to push against the ground.
Keep your palms flat.
Stand up in a balanced and controlled manner.
This method provides better support and follows the natural Sunnah posture.
4️⃣ Incorrect Way to Stand
The wrong method shown in the image includes:
Using closed fists to push up.
Placing knuckles on the ground instead of palms.
This is not the preferred method mentioned by scholars.
Important Note
There are slight differences of opinion among scholars regarding finger movement (whether to move continuously or keep it steady). However, raising the index finger only is widely accepted in authentic narrations.
The most important part of Tashahhud is humility, focus, and sincerity while remembering Allah.
