ALLEGED ELECTORAL REGISTER MANIPULATION AND CORRUPTION CLAIMS RAISE QUESTIONS OVER LOCAL ELECTIONS

Concerns over alleged manipulation of local electoral processes have emerged in Zeu Sub-county, Ora County, following claims that an Electoral Commission staff member allegedly paid a voter registrar UGX 30,000 to prevent the name of a particular LC II candidate from appearing on the voter register during the just concluded LCII election.
According to the allegations, the move was allegedly intended to favour a preferred candidate during the registration exercise. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the candidate whose registration was allegedly being blocked reportedly registered in another village where he had settled with his second wife
He subsequently secured the NRM flag after his main opponent stepped aside, leaving him unopposed in the party primary.
The former opponent later returned to the race as an independent candidate. In the subsequent election, the NRM flag bearer reportedly won with 95 votes, while the independent candidate obtained 40 votes.

The claims come amid broader allegations of electoral misconduct highlighted in a social media post by @DrBellahh, which alleges that the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, ordered the arrest of an NRM chairperson accused of selling NRM party cards for UGX 2 million and allegedly facilitating electoral malpractice.
The post further claims that the minister had been directed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to address election disputes in Kasangati.
The allegations have generated renewed debate about the integrity of electoral processes, the conduct of party officials and the need for transparency during voter registration and primary elections.
While the claims circulating on social media and those concerning the Zeu registration exercise remain allegations, they raise important questions that warrant verification by the relevant electoral and law-enforcement authorities.
Stakeholders in Zombo and elsewhere are calling for electoral processes to be conducted fairly, transparently and in accordance with the law, with any allegations of bribery, manipulation or interference subjected to proper investigation.
