Legislators from the West Nile region have called on President Yoweri Museveni to urgently convene a high-level meeting to address the escalating land conflict in Apaa. The renewed violence in the area has raised concerns over security, displacement, and the welfare of the affected communities.

The Apaa land dispute has been a long-standing conflict between different ethnic groups, primarily the Madi and Acholi communities.

The contested land, located along the border of Amuru and Adjumani districts, has been a source of violent clashes for years. Several government interventions, including parliamentary investigations and ministerial visits, have failed to deliver a lasting solution.

In a joint statement, Members of Parliament from West Nile, most of whom are affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), insisted that President Museveni’s direct involvement is necessary to resolve the crisis.

They argue that the government’s past efforts have not fully addressed the root causes of the conflict, leading to recurring violence and loss of life.

• "The situation in Apaa is deteriorating, and people are living in fear. The President must intervene personally to bring all stakeholders to the table and ensure a permanent solution is found," one of the MPs stated.

Recent clashes have resulted in deaths, injuries, and displacement of hundreds of residents. Reports indicate that homes have been torched, and livelihoods destroyed, worsening the humanitarian situation.

Local leaders have warned that failure to act could lead to further bloodshed and deepen ethnic tensions in the region.

The legislators have proposed an emergency meeting involving President Museveni, security agencies, local leaders, and representatives from the affected communities.

They believe that a presidential directive would carry the necessary weight to enforce lasting resolutions, including proper land demarcation, compensation plans, and conflict mediation strategies.

The Apaa land crisis has also drawn attention from human rights organizations, who have urged the government to uphold the rights of those displaced by the violence. There are growing calls for a transparent and fair resolution process that respects the historical claims of all communities involved.
