MPs Bag Shs100 Million Each in Controversial Cash Windfall Ahead of Easter Break

Uganda’s Parliament has once again made headlines, with every MP set to pocket Shs100 million each, sourced from the Shs4 trillion supplementary budget passed last month. The funds are reportedly aimed at mobilizing constituents in support of government programs.

The cash distribution has raised eyebrows due to the secrecy and timing surrounding the payments. While many MPs confirmed the funds were for mobilization, others have remained silent, raising concerns about transparency and accountability in government spending, especially during an election year.

While NRM MPs received their funds from the Office of the President, opposition and independent MPs picked theirs from Parliament. This division has fueled political tensions, with critics accusing the government of using taxpayer money for political purposes and election-related activities.Nrm mps

Opposition figures, led by Robert Kyagulanyi, have strongly criticized the move, demanding transparency and accountability in how the funds are utilized. They argue that such sums could easily be misused for political manipulation, especially in the lead-up to the 2026 general elections.

MPs' responses to the payments have been mixed. Some have defended the initiative, citing the need to engage with their constituents and promote government programs, while others have expressed discomfort with the large sums, questioning their origins and the timing of the disbursement.

This latest cash bonanza has reignited long-standing debates about the use of public funds for political purposes. In the past, Parliament has been criticized for doling out large amounts of money to MPs, often under controversial circumstances, raising concerns about political patronage and corruption.

In 2017, MPs received Shs200 million each for "unforeseen expenses" related to the constitutional amendment that allowed President Museveni to run for another term. Similarly, in 2018, MPs were given Shs10 billion for consultations ahead of the age limit vote.

The timing and secrecy surrounding these payments have left many Ugandans questioning whether such financial windfalls are legitimate or simply a tool for political gain. This ongoing controversy highlights the deepening trust issues between the government and the public, especially concerning the management of taxpayer money.
