Nebbi Mother Reunited with Newborn After Dumping Baby in Pit Latrine

A mother who dumped her newborn baby girl in a pit latrine last week and fled has been traced and reunited with the infant.
The newborn was rescued in Nyarugalu Ward, Parombo Town Council, Nebbi District.
Neighbors quickly responded to the baby's cries and rushed her to a local health facility.
Samuel Katusime, Male Youth Councilor and Secretary for Production in Parombo Town Council, confirmed the development.
He said the mother attributed the incident to extreme stress and called for greater shared responsibilities within families.
A local women's rights activist emphasized the need for intensified community sensitization to prevent similar cases.
According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025, there were 1,205 child abandonment cases recorded, down from 1,597 in 2024.
The report links such incidents to stigma, poverty, lack of support, unplanned pregnancies, mental health challenges, and fear of rejection.
