A four-year-old girl has died after being swept away by stormwater following a heavy downpour in Jupujuru Village, Serr Parish, Abanga Sub-county, Zombo District.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at about 1 p.m., according to local leaders.

Fortunate Anirwoth was reportedly returning from her grandparents’ home to her parents’ home when she fell into a runoff channel within a compound and was carried away by fast-flowing water.

Benedict Odar, the Jupujuru Village LC1 chairperson, said the girl’s body was later found more than 200 metres away near a valley.

“This tragic incident occurred on Sunday at around 1 PM. The child was moving from her grandparents' home to her parents' home when she reportedly fell into a runoff channel,” Odar said.

By press time, the body was at the family home as relatives prepared for burial.

Justine Oryem, the Serr Parish councillor, condoled with the bereaved family and urged parents to closely supervise young children during the rainy season.

“We call upon parents to take extra care of young children during this rainy season, as we risk losing more lives to similar tragedies,” Oryem said.
